A FORGOTTEN CRISIS IN CAMEROON- THE CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN OUT OF SCHOOL FOR FIVE YEARS — Street Child

For the third year in a row, Cameroon is listed as one of the world’s most neglected displacement crises. The humanitarian response, so critical for people like Nadine and her family who have had to leave their homes and lives behind to flee fighting, is severely underfunded.

Street Child is working with our excellent local partners on the ground to design and roll-out community-based, low-resource projects to provide support to communities in the most cost-effective way – we can provide education, child protection and livelihoods support at just £16 per child. We also provide quality learning – in our education pilots, 78% of children demonstrated improved reading skills and 74% demonstrated improved maths skills after just 2 months.

Perhaps most importantly, our partners’ work so far has shown that it is possible to provide education safely to children even in the most challenging context where education has been under attack, if projects are designed with input and engagement from communities and stakeholders.

So far, we have provided access to learning to 3,367 children – 73% of whom hadn’t been to school in several years. Our goal is to continue this work, and to provide more structured and long-term opportunities for children like Nadine; to build better classrooms, continue to train teachers, provide basic infrastructure such as toilet facilities and provide specialist psychological support for traumatised children.

Your ongoing support allows us to scale up this response and ensure more children, like Nadine, are able to remain safe, in school and learning. We would be immensely grateful  to anyone who wishes to show their support by donating to our vital work.
