Afghanistan — Street Child

Street Child’s team in Afghanistan have been working for children, continuously, since 1997*.

These 25-years have seen many incredibly challenging passages but our Afghan staff have stood and delivered throughout.

This time will be no different. We remain committed to Afghan children’s safety and futures through education.

However, the current situation is amongst the most uncertain and worrying ever.

Our immediate priority is the security of our amazing staff. We are in contact with the team on the ground and believe all our staff to be okay, although fearful. Our programmes in Kabul are currently paused; however, we continue to ensure educational access and life-saving learning for children in Baghlan, Uruzgan and Zabul – both boys and girls.

We will resume our vital work in Kabul as soon as possible – and are planning our response for the thousands of displaced children and caregivers to start in the coming days.

In 2021 we aimed to bring education to 40,000 Afghan girls and boys, many for the very first time. Most of these children are in rural areas where the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) has long been a de facto authority and with who we are accustomed to liaising with to achieve our goals for children. We remain committed to achieving these goals.

As a humanitarian agency we will also seek to urgently respond however we can to best meet the needs of children and families displaced by the recent conflict, in Kabul and across the country.

We are so grateful to everyone who has supported our work in Afghanistan over the years. At this worrying and difficult time we would be immensely grateful to anyone that wished to show their support for the children of Afghanistan by donating to our vital work.

*Initially as ‘Children in Crisis’, the charity that merged into Street Child in 2018.

Street Child’s main operational areas are Kabul, Baghlan, Uruzgan and Zabul. Education programmes remain live in Baghlan, Uruzgan and Zabul.
